Everyone at Whitstable Town Football Club was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Brian Gambrill, one of the best goalkeepers to play for the club. Brian was born locally and still regularly attended Whitstable matches as a supporter.
He first signed for Whitstable in the 1967-68 season after being released by Millwall, before going on to play for Canterbury City in the Southern League for a number of years. He returned to his hometown club at the start of the 1979-80 season and was a key member of the Whitstable team that won the Kent League Cup that season in a memorable final at Sittingbourne when they fought back from 3-1 down to beat favourites Chatham Town 4-3 after extra time. Brian was chosen as player of the year that season, and the next.
In the 1982-83 season, Brian was the hero, making a number of vital saves, when Whitstable pulled off a great FA Cup upset by beating Isthmian League Bromley 1-0 in front of a big crowd at the Belmont. He retired in 1984.
We will be having a minute’s applause in memory of Brian at our next first team home match, against Bearsted on Tuesday 11th November.
The funeral will take place on Thursday 13th November at 11.30 am at Faversham Crematorium, with the wake to follow from 1.0 pm at Whitstable Cricket Club.
