Experienced defender joins The Oysters

Whitstable Town are delighted to announce the signing of experienced defender Ian Gayle following his departure from Ramsgate.

The commanding centre-back arrives with a wealth of experience across the National League and Isthmian League, having built an impressive non-league career spanning more than a decade. Gayle began his career with Dagenham & Redbridge, progressing through the club’s academy system before making his Football League debut in 2014.

During his time with the Daggers, Gayle gained valuable experience through loan spells with clubs including Histon, Whitehawk, Bishop’s Stortford and St Albans City , before later enjoying successful spells with Welling United, Braintree Town, Wealdstone, Woking and Eastbourne Borough.

More recently, the 33-year-old spent three seasons with Folkestone Invicta before moving to Lewes and then Ramsgate last season. A strong, physical and composed defender, Gayle is also capable of playing at right-back and brings leadership, experience and a real presence to the squad.

Manager Lee Martin said:
“Ian is a player who brings real experience and leadership to the dressing room. He’s played at a very good level for a number of years and knows what it takes to compete week in, week out.

“He’s strong defensively, excellent in the air and very comfortable on the ball. He’s also someone who understands the standards we want around the club and will be a big influence on the younger lads in the squad.

“When the opportunity came up to bring in someone with Ian’s experience and quality, it was an easy decision for us. We’re delighted to get the deal done and I’m looking forward to working with him this season.”

Everyone at Whitstable Town Football Club would like to welcome Ian Gayle to the club and wish him every success in our colours.
