A review of the early weeks of an interrupted campaign

The current national lockdown comes to an end this week and a return to football was anticipated. Clubs were planning training sessions and arranging games as the Isthmian League had confirmed a full return from 19th December. Then came the news that the government was introducing a new tiering system with extra restrictions that would impact non-elite football. Games are permitted, but fans will not be allowed to attend games at tier 3 clubs, with Kent and Medway being put into tier 3. This means that the Isthmian South East Division now contains a mixture of tier 2 and tier 3 clubs, leaving some at a disadvantage. Another problem for clubs in both tiers is the new guidance preventing the sale of food and drink facilities at their grounds. This all makes the return to competitive football a considerable financial headache for clubs,

All affected leagues now have to decide whether to restart or continue the current suspension. Some have already put their return on hold. The Step 3 and 4 leagues are consulting with their member clubs and a decision is expected later this week.

While we await confirmation of a possible restart – or not, below is a review of the football that was played by Whitstable Town in the couple of months before the season was halted, together with a look at other news from the club, including the latest thoughts from the chairman and first team manager.
