Whitstable Walking 60s entered their second tournament of the off-season with a trip to the Gallagher Stadium, home of Maidstone United — a venue that holds happy memories following the first team's success in the Kent Senior Trophy.
The tournament began positively for the Oystermen, with Ged's goal securing a 1-0 victory in the opening game. Things continued brightly in the second match when Geoff's superb strike put Whitstable ahead. However, a controversial sending-off after just five minutes left the side playing a man short in soaring temperatures for the remainder of the contest, and they eventually succumbed to defeat.
Game three saw Whitstable face the reigning tournament champions. A costly defensive error proved decisive, gifting the opposition the only goal of the game in a narrow 1-0 loss.
Despite the setbacks, Whitstable progressed to the play-off stage. A series of outstanding saves from the Anchorians goalkeeper kept the Oystermen at bay before a late, soft goal ended their hopes of advancing further.
Considering the intense heat and the quality of the opposition, it was a highly encouraging performance from the squad, who showed great determination throughout the day.
