More work to do as Whitstable restart their pre-season schedule

CANTERBURY CITY 4 WHITSTABLE TOWN 2
Pre-season friendly
Saturday July 24 2021 15.00

With the cancellation of the previous two planned games due to COVID issues, Whitstable returned to action with the short trip to Faversham to take on Canterbury City, who begin their SCEFL Premier Division campaign next Saturday. The Isthmian League kicks off two weeks later and the Oystermen looked as though they will need that extra time to prepare following a lacklustre performance on a humid afternoon.

City started the better and had an early header comfortably saved, but soon found themselves ahead when some hesitant defending gave their number 10 the space to hook the ball over the stranded Connor Collins, the young Folkestone goalkeeper who was playing in place of the unavailable Dan Eason. Things got worse for the visiting defence in the 19th minute when they failed to deal with a long throw and former Whitstable academy player Teddy Nelson fired the loose ball into the net. Whitstable improved a little with some better possession and Ryan Flack just failed to divert a Liam Gillies towards goal, then Leo Mazzone got clear in the box, but was denied by the City goalkeeper. The home number 9 blazed a shot over the bar following a weak clearance, whilst at the other end a stooping Aaron Millbank headed a corner wide. Whitstable did pull a goal back in the 38th minute after some good play on the right by Liam Gillies whose low cross was steered into the net by George McIlroy. Both teams had efforts off target, before City made it 3-1 in added time. Another long throw caused problems and one effort was cleared off the line before the ball reached Nelson outside the box and his low right footed shot beat the left hand of the diving Collins.

City had a great chance to score again in the opening moments of the second half, but the ball was lifted over the bar by an unmarked number 14. It was 4-1 in the 55th minute when Whitstable lost possession and a long ball found their number 9 in space on the right and he shot past Collins. There was little action of note in the next 20 minutes, during which Whitstable made seven substitutions. Reece Gillies then forced a save from the home goalkeeper and a Harry Stannard cross was headed over by Tom Mills. Whitstable finally got a late second when a Stannard free kick was spilled by the goalkeeper and Liam Gillies put the rebound into the net. The final whistle blew a couple of minutes later to confirm a 4-2 win for Canterbury in their final pre-season game. For Whitstable, preparations continue with a home friendly against Margate on Tuesday.
