EDGWARE & KINGSBURY 0 WHITSTABLE TOWN 9
Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round
Saturday August 16 2025 15.00
The Whitstable supporters that bothered to travel to Northwest London to watch this FA Cup tie had very few anxious moments as their team cruised to a record breaking 9-0 victory. Two early goals for Bradley Schafer set the tone and although the home side created a few half chances Whitstable always looked likely to progress. Schafer went on to complete a hat trick, which was matched by Joe Healy who also helped himself to a treble and there were also goals for Will Thomas, Dean Grant and a late penalty dispatched by Theo Osinfolarin completed the rout. The one blemish on the afternoon was a controversial red card for Mikey Dalton. The home team actually finished the game with nine players after having two sent off in the second half.
After the 7-2 win at Lingfield in the Extra Preliminary Round, Whitstable found themselves with another away trip to face Edgware and Kingsbury who had beaten fellow Combined Counties Premier Division North side British Airways 2-0 in the previous round. The game was played at the Silver Jubilee Park Stadium, in sight of the famous Wembley arch, and another reminder of Whitstable's FA Vase triumph there in May. The crowd for this match was at the other end of the scale, reported as just 64, with probably the majority supporting the Oystermen. Whitstable made just one change to the team that started in the midweek draw at Bearsted, with Joe Healy replacing Dean Grant, meaning that the hat trick hero from the last round was named as the senior member of the otherwise very young group of substitutes.
The first goal nearly came in the 6th minute when a Bradley Schafer throw was helped on at the near post, but an unmarked Jake McIntyre sliding in at the back post failed to make the necessary connection and when he eventually hooked the ball towards goal, Aram Sarkissian was able to get back to save. Whitstable were soon in front however when the Wares defence failed to properly clear and Finn O'Mara played the ball forward to Javaun Splatt who took a touch before finding Schafer and he shot past Sarkissian. A spell of Whitstable pressure led to a second goal in the 11th minute when O'Mara initially had a shot blocked, with what appeared to be a raised arm, Sarkissian then did well to save as Will Thomas followed in, but Mikey Dalton lifted the ball back for Schafer who volleyed in from 12 yards. Another Schafer throw caused problems and when the ball reached Thomas, his fierce shot was well saved. Edgware had a chance in the 17th minute as a cross came in from the left and the ball was deflected to Youssef Enajer, but his shot lacked the power to trouble Dan Colmer. The main threat for the home team came from Darrell Edgar-Phillips on the left and O'Mara got across to block one effort before Schafer pounced on some careless defending and won the ball, only to see his shot saved by the busy Sarkissian. A promising break gave Edgar-Phillips another opportunity and he cut inside before trying a shot that was easily held by Colmer.
Whitstable lost left wing back Jayden Boulton due to an injury on 30 minutes and he was replaced by striker Ashdon Day as the team was reshuffled. They were gifted a third goal in the 33rd minute when the Edgware defence tried to play out from the back, but inexplicably passed straight to Schafer and the ball rebounded to Healy who gratefully lifted it over the stranded goalkeeper. Splatt forced another save from Sarkissian, then the home team twice went close to reducing the deficit. A corner was headed towards goal, but Dalton was on the line to clear, then a right wing cross was met by Edgar-Phillips who only managed to steer it straight to Colmer. They would not get another chance and Whitstable settled the game by half time. Day sent the ball over from the right and it hit the far post before dropping kindly for Schafer to complete his hat trick from close range on 39 minutes. Whitstable added a fifth goal in the 45th minute when Thomas headed a Schafer corner just inside the far post. Just before the whistle, Splatt had another shot saved, but a 5-0 score line meant the game was effectively over.
The second half was an opportunity for Whitstable to use their permitted substitutes and give some minutes to some of the younger players on the bench. Fin Cotton had an early shot blocked, but the main talking point came in the 52nd minute. Dalton went to retrieve the ball after a foul throw by David Agyemang, but the Edgware player had other ideas and some pushing and shoving followed. After some lengthy discussions by the officials, Agyemang was sent off, then to the disbelief of the nearby Whitstable bench, Dalton was also shown red and there was also a yellow for Splatt. It appeared that the officials had not really seen the incident clearly. Whitstable quickly responded with two more goals. Day's cross was nodded back by Splatt for Healy to apply the finish, then a minute later Colmer kicked the ball long and Healy let it bounce before calmly lobbing it over Sarkissian from 20 yards for his third and Whitstable's seventh in the 56th minute.
Healy sent Splatt away on the left, but his shot was pushed around the post. It was now just a question of how many Whitstable would score as Day and Splatt put efforts over the top and Theo Osinfolarin had a shot strike a covering defender. The managers made changes, then Splatt ran down the right and passed inside to Osinfolarin who made room to shoot, but was denied by another good save. In the 74th minute, there was another FA Cup goal for substitute Dean Grant, following his three in the previous round, as he timed his run on to O'Mara's long ball and slotted past Sarkissian. Things deteriorated further for Edgware when Oliver Modeste decided to push two Whitstable players over in the box when the ball was nowhere near, so he was sent off and with the ball still active, a penalty was awarded, which Osinfolarin fired in to make it 9-0 in the 85th minute. There was another delay while an apparently abusive spectator behind the goal was dealt with. Academy player Jake Abrahams looked lively in the closing minutes, crashing one shot off the bar and putting another just past the far post, but Whitstable were convincingly though to the next round. Unsurprisingly, this was their largest ever win in the competition and they have now scored 16 goals in two away ties, including three hat tricks.
Whitstable have two league matches over the Bank Holiday weekend, away to Sutton Athletic and home to Faversham Strike Force before the next round of the FA Cup on August 30, the draw for which takes place on Monday.
