Deres beaten in Friday night friendly

ERITH & BELVEDERE 1 WHITSTABLE TOWN 4
Pre-season friendly
Friday July 10 2026 19.45

Pre-season game number three was away to SCEFL Premier Division team Erith & Belvedere, although the venue was the home of Chislehurst Glebe. This Friday evening meeting, just three days after the previous game, saw a number of changes to the Whitstable team. Ian Gayle was available to make his first appearance in a Whitstable shirt, with Kweku Lucan and Robbie Rees also back after missing the first two friendlies; Gayle and Rees were both introduced at half time. Several new trialists were also included in the squad.

The Deres enjoyed plenty of time on the ball in the first half, but found themselves trailing by three goals at the interval, and it could have been more. Whitstable opened the scoring in the 7th minute when a long ball over the top by Dan Colmer was collected by Lucan who shot into the far corner. The lead was doubled in the 19th minute from a Tom Beere corner on the right that was played short to Charlie Thomson who delivered an inviting cross to the back post where it was headed in by Liam Boxall. The strength of Alex Wall caused problems for the Deres defence and he almost added a third when Lucan's cross from the left found him unmarked in the box, but his shot hit the post. In the 27th minute, Lucan raced clear and tried to chip the advancing goalkeeper who reached up to handle the goal bound ball outside his area. The referee reluctantly, although correctly, reached for a red card, but after some discussion allowed a substitute keeper to be introduced and for eleven Deres players to remain on the pitch. Whitstable soon made it 3-0 when Wall rose unchallenged to head in a left wing cross with 34 minutes on the clock. Whitstable needed a good save from Colmer to prevent the Deres pulling one back, as he dived to his right to turn a shot around the post.

Whitstable made a number of changes for the second half and there were fewer chances to increase the score, but they did make it four in the 71st minute when a cross from the left by a trialist was converted by Derek Asamoah. The Deres got some reward for their efforts there minutes later when a quick pass sent a player clean through and he shot past substitute keeper Zach Keeble. More changes to the team seemed to affect the Whitstable organisation and they might have conceded again, but some determined defending saw Jeremiah Gyebi pick up an injury before a close range shot was deflected over the bar. Whitstable still threatened another goal themselves as Boxall shot wide after a promising run from his own half and a trialist had a shot cleared off the line, but they had their second win of the week as preparations continue for the season ahead.

Whitstable travel again on Tuesday evening when they play Hollands & Blair in the next game of their pre-season campaign.
