Whitstable hit four at Glebe in a much improved team performance

GLEBE 2 WHITSTABLE TOWN 4
SCEFL Premier Division
Saturday October 8 2022 15.00

With pressure mounting following three successive losses, this away fixture at Glebe did not appear to be the easiest opportunity for Whitstable to turn things around, but those that travelled to Chislehurst witnessed a good performance and a deserved three points. Whitstable took an early lead when a Harry O’Donnell cross found its way into the net via the far post. It looked as though a couple of defensive lapses might lead to another defeat when Harry Gamble and Jamie Philpot both scored to put Glebe 2-1 ahead at the half hour mark. Whitstable battled back however and Tom Mills equalised from a set piece just before the break. In the second half, Matt Gething headed Whitstable back in front and Josh Oliver added a fourth from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box. Glebe rarely threatened a comeback as Whitstable held on comfortably for a valuable win.

Glebe had finished third in the 2021-22 season and are one of the clubs expected to be challenging for honours again this season, although like Whitstable have not had the consistent start that they might have wished for. Runaway leaders Erith and Belvedere had beaten them 4-2 in their last fixture, while Whitstable were looking to recover from consecutive defeats to Deal Town, Erith Town and Kennington. Tom Mills returned to the Whitstable team after his one game ban and Stephen Okoh came into the starting eleven having just re-joined the club on dual registration from Ashford United. Kyron Lightfoot picked up an injury in the previous game, but was named among the substitutes and James Huggins was unavailable.

After a quiet opening, Whitstable found themselves ahead in the 10th minute. George Sheminant, who had a good game in midfield, had an initial attempt blocked but played the ball out to O’Donnell on the left and was involved again, regaining possession near the corner flag before O’Donnell delivered the ball, which went over goalkeeper Tommy Crump, struck the top of the far post and went into the net, possibly with the aid of a deflection off the stranded Crump. Sheminant then had a shot saved by Crump and Oliver fired just over the top after some promising approach play. Glebe were passing the ball around without hurting Whitstable until they found a way through in the 22nd minute. Philpot passed to Harvey Smith who was just onside and he squared the ball from the right for Gamble to shoot past Eason. Whitstable gifted Glebe a second in the 29th minute when Eason played a free kick into the middle for Freeman Rogers whose ball forward was intercepted by Ross Craig and he found Philpot who finished well. The travelling supporters must have begun to feel that another defeat was on the cards, but to their credit Whitstable found a way back into the game. Sheminant and Okoh had efforts blocked and at the other end Freddie Cray made space for a shot, which went wide. Some good play on the right led to a Whitstable corner that was headed just over the bar by Rogers. Whitstable made it 2-2 in the 43rd minute when an Oliver free kick was headed back across goal by Rogers and Mills was able to control the ball at the back post before finding the net. The teams went in level at half time, with more goals always seeming likely in the second half.

Gething received the ball from Okoh, turned and shot, but Crump saved easily, as did Eason when Smith tried his luck a few minutes later. The teams traded further shots before Whitstable scored their third in the 63rd minute. Some good pressure won possession, Oliver was sent away down the right and delivered the perfect cross from the edge of the penalty area for Gething to rise and plant a firm header into the back of the net. Eason turned away a shot from substitute Marcel McDonald and Gamble’s header was off target from the resulting corner. The lively Okoh was causing problems for the home defence and had a shot saved at the near post by Crump, then Mills made a timely intervention when James Dyer threatened for Glebe. Whitstable were looking the more likely scorers though and when another good run by Okoh released Oliver, he was brought down by George Snelling in the box. After a delay while the Glebe defender was shown a yellow card, Oliver sent Crump the wrong way from the spot to make it 4-2 in the 73rd minute. Whitstable finished the game quite strongly and an Oliver free kick went right across goal with nobody able to make a connection, substitute Muhammed Cham tested Crump again at his near post and Whitstable won three late corners, but there were no further goals despite eight added minutes.

Whitstable will hope to build on this much improved display when former manager Scott Porter brings his Hollands and Blair team to the Belmont on Tuesday evening. Their team contains a number of former Oystermen and they will no doubt provide a stern test.
