Whitstable start Bank Holiday weekend with a win

WHITSTABLE TOWN 3 KENNINGTON 0
SCEFL Premier Division
Saturday August 26 2023 15.00

The August Bank Holiday weekend fixtures began with Whitstable collecting three home points from an ultimately comfortable win against Kennington, although they really should have put the game to bed considerably earlier than they did. After hitting the bar and missing a penalty, they had to wait until deep into first half added time before Josh Williams fired in an unstoppable opener. Kennington stayed in the game, but apart from hitting the bar early on, rarely threatened Dan Eason in the home goal. Tyler Anderson eventually fired in a second following a quick break and Josh Oliver wrapped things up from the penalty spot after he had been fouled in the box.

There was one change to the Whitstable starting eleven from the FA Cup win at VCD, with Eri Akintimehin coming in for Josh Oliver. Ben Cheklit, Tyler Anderson and Ed May were fit to return and took their place on the bench as manager Marcel Nimani had one eye on a busy week of challenging fixtures ahead. Former Whitstable player Kyron Lightfoot started for Kennington, who had collected just a single point from their two league games, but are still in the FA Cup after enjoying impressive wins against Glebe and Cobham.

Showers were threatened, but never really arrived in Whitstable, to the relief of the 402 in attendance. Akintimehin had a low shot gathered by Joe Mant, but there was an early scare at the other end when Max Sutton crossed from the left to Ryan Philpott who was allowed to continue despite a hint of offside, but his shot bounced off the bar to be safely caught by Dan Eason. Steadman Callender then got free and steered a low shot past Mant only for Jordan Griffin to slide in to clear. Kennington were forced into an early change when James Haylock-Ashdown limped off to be replaced by Craig Calvert in the 14th minute. Rodney Eruotor won the ball in midfield and strode towards goal, but Liam Whiting did well to get in a timely block. Will Thomas headed a Liam Gillies free kick towards goal, but Mant saved, then Josh Williams beat a couple of defenders before shooting just wide.

A back pass caused problems for Mant whose attempted clearance went straight to Akintimehin and when he was fouled right on the 18 yard line by Whiting, Eruotor’s free kick struck the bar. Whitstable were creating a number of opportunities without being able to find a goal. Another free kick was only cleared as far as Thomas whose first time shot was saved by Mant, then a promising move involving Williams, Eruotor and Gillies was halted by a foul on Eruotor in the box and although the loose ball was put into the net by Callender, the referee had quickly blown to award a penalty. Eruotor stepped up, but his effort hit the post and before being cleared. An ambitious overhead kick by the second Kennington substitute Fin Dent was held by Eason. There were seven added minutes at the end of the first half and in the last of them, Williams received the ball from Jake Mackenzie on the right, cut in and swerved a great 20 yard shot into the far corner, giving Mant no chance and sending Whitstable into the break leading 1-0.

Whitstable made two changes when the teams returned, with the introduction of Harry Gamble and Tyler Anderson and those two substitutes combined to set up Callender who found the corner of the net, but he was surprised to be adjudged offside. Anderson then curled a shot onto the top of the net as Whitstable continued to create openings. Eason caught a Lightfoot shot just under the bar before both managers made further changes. Josh Oliver shot wide after Gamble had won possession, then in the 72nd minute Whitstable finally found the second goal they had been threatening. It came from a Kennington corner that was cleared by Ben Cheklit to Gillies who found Williams on the right and his cross was steered past Mant by Anderson. Philpott curled a free kick straight to Eason, but Whitstable scored again in the 89th minute when Oliver robbed Adam Phillips and raced towards goal before being barged over in the box by Whiting and he fired the resulting penalty past Mant. There was then a Whitstable first team debut for academy player Ed May who was sent on for the last few minutes. In stoppage time, Eason saved a low Philpott shot and Mant denied Anderson following a one-two with Gamble, but the score remained 3-0 at the final whistle.

Whitstable next make the short trip to take on Faversham Town for a Bank Holiday Monday derby, then their FA Cup journey continues on Saturday when Isthmian Premier club Wingate & Finchley visit the Belmont for the first time.
