Missed chances and poor second half performance leave Whitstable well beaten

WHITSTABLE TOWN 0 FISHER 4
SCEFL Premier Division
Saturday March 9 2024 15:00

Whitstable returned to action after a two week break, but fell to a very disappointing, heavy home defeat. They had a few good scoring opportunities in the first half, but failed to take any and paid the price when Jacob Katonia fired Fisher ahead just before half time. Flavio Jumo added a second early in the second half and Whitstable offered little in response. Despite several substitutions, there rarely looked any way back for the home team and the game was effectively over when Nathan Tshola was left all alone to head in a free kick. Michael Sarpong added a late fourth and a number of Whitstable supporters decided not to stay for the eight added minutes, as Fisher thoroughly deserved their win.

Whitstable had won an entertaining game 4-3 at Fisher back in November during a run of positive results, since when the Bermondsey based club have seen their manager depart and return. They arrived at the Belmont after three straight defeats, the last two being 5-2 reverses. Eniye Amgbaduba was back in the Fisher team after a brief spell at Whitstable, who made just one change to their starting eleven, with Harvey Smith replacing Jeff Duah-Kessie. There were 376 in attendance on a sunny afternoon on the Kent coast.

Fisher started brightly with Danelle Bailey-King causing some problems on the right, but Whitstable survived a few dangerous crosses into the box. Harvey Smith had the first shot for the home team in the 5th minute, shooting wide from 25 yards. Most of the Whitstable chances were created by the pace of Josh Williams, operating on the left during the first half, and one of his early crosses fell nicely for Mikey Dalton, but his shot was well blocked by the Fisher defence. Whitstable had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 14th minute when another Williams cross was met by Smith in space on the 6 yard line, but he failed to connect and the ball was cleared away. Ollie Gray headed out a dangerous Bailey-King cross, then a few minutes later he was in the right place again to deflect the ball for a corner when Amgbaduba steered a Flavio Jumo cross towards goal. Whitstable failed to make the most of another opening in the 25th minute when Williams and Liam Gillies combined to find James Jeffrey in the box, but his goal bound shot hit Prince Imoru and rebounded to Liam Gillies, but with the goal at his mercy, his header lacked the power and direction needed and Mo Otuyo was able to grab the ball safely.

Whitstable suffered a major blow when Gray had to depart early, in the 37th minute, having picked up a leg injury. Jordan Perrin was called into action, parrying a shot by Amgbaduba as Fisher grew in confidence and they took the lead in the 40th minute. Amgbaduba got his head to a throw in on the right and the ball was deflected into the middle where Jacob Katonia turned well on the edge of the box, leaving two defenders on the ground, before firing a left footed shot past Perrin. A low Jeffrey shot was safely pouched by Otuyo just before the break, leaving Fisher with a 1-0 lead after a closely fought half and Whitstable were left to reflect on some missed chances.

The Fisher right back would probably have been relieved to see Williams switch to the opposite wing for the second half and Whitstable struggled to create much to trouble the visitors’ defence. Amgbaduba set up Bailey-King who shot into the side netting and after Williams had an effort blocked, Imoru headed a corner over the bar at the other end. Smith then headed the ball across for Liam Gillies in space on the edge of the box, but he shot over the top. Marcel Nimani made a double substitution in the 56th minute, introducing Josh Oliver and Malachi Hudson. Callum Flynn collected the game’s only yellow card for a foul on Williams, but Fisher scored their second in the 59th minute. An attempted clearance by Liam Gillies was charged down and Katonia played the ball across to Flavio Jumo who slid it past Perrin.

A good cross by Oliver was almost poked past Otuyo by Jeffrey, but the goalkeeper was able to keep the ball out, then Oliver and Williams both had shots charged down in quick succession as the Fisher defence held firm. Whitstable saw plenty of the ball, but were slow to threaten the away goal, although Reece Gillies drew a save from Otuyo in the 72nd minute. When Bailey-King won a free kick on the right, it was curled in by Flynn and Nathan Tshola found himself completely free a couple of yards from goal to head past Perrin and make it 3-0 in the 77th minute. The fourth and last goal was scored in the 86th minute when a Whitstable attack broke down and Thomas Ngegba broke forward before finding Sam Sene-Richardson and his shot was deflected into the path of Michael Sarpong who hit it first time into the net to complete a great afternoon for his team – and a miserable one for Whitstable.

Whitstable have another home game on Saturday when Tunbridge Wells visit the Belmont.
