LORDSWOOD 0 WHITSTABLE TOWN 3
SCEFL Premier Division
Thursday April 17 2025 19.45
Manager Jamie Coyle made seven changes to the team that beat Lydd two days earlier and they put in another professional performance to ease to a 3-0 away win at Lordswood. Ashdon Day nodded in a very early goal, but the rest of the first half remained quite competitive and Lordswood created a few opportunities to get themselves into the game. The second half however was pretty much one way traffic and two Ronald Sithole goals were enough to give Whitstable a comfortable win and confirm Lordswood's relegation.
Former Whitstable manager Scott Porter was recently appointed Lordswood manager, but the task of keeping the team in the SCEFL Premier Division always looked a difficult one and to stand any chance now, this was a game they really had to win. Whitstable, playing every other day at the moment, have assembled a large squad including a number of good young players, so have been able to rest and rotate players, while allowing those with injuries a chance to recover. Seven players that hadn't started against Lydd returned to the team and a number of others were there to support from the side-lines. The Oyster fans once more travelled in good numbers to swell the crowd to 232.
This did not look like a pitch for playing much football on as it was very worn and the ball went from end to end quite quickly. Whitstable nearly scored right at the start when a corner was headed just wide at the near post by Dean Grant. They did score in the 6th minute however from another corner when Bradley Schafer's delivery to the back post was headed back by Grant and Ashdon Day standing just in front of the goalkeeper flicked a header past him into the corner of the net. Lordswood almost equalised in the 11th minute when a throw in caused problems as Lekan Osideko's shot hit Connor Wilkins and Dan Colmer saved the follow up shot from Tunde Aderonmu. George Miles struck a free kick into the Whitstable wall then fired the rebound high and wide although for some reason the referee awarded a corner that was fortunately cleared.
Lordswood continued to apply some pressure and a 20th minute corner was headed wide by an unmarked Charlie Plummer. A deep cross from Miles was met by Sam Wright whose looping header was well tipped over the bar by Colmer. A long ball forward was headed on by Day for Grant whose shot was deflected wide. Whitstable got away with some hesitation at the back at the expense of a corner that came to nothing. Colmer had to be alert to collect another ball in the box as Whitstable struggled to regain control. Schafer had a long shot comfortably saved then Day shot over from distance and Whitstable led 1-0 at half time, although had not been wholly convincing.
Osideko fired a free kick into the wall when play resumed, but Whitstable gradually took control. Schafer won possession on the left and played Grant in, but his shot from a tight angle was saved. The lead was doubled in the 52nd minute when Grant got the better of Plummer and ran down the left wing before crossing the ball for Day whose shot was pushed out by Josh Bexon, but only to Ronald Sithole who made no mistake from six yards. Day chipped the ball over the top to Schafer, but he couldn't get a proper connection and Bexon gathered. A Boulton cross was headed just past the far post by Grant as Day tried to apply the finish. Whitstable won a free kick just outside the box and Jake McIntyre struck it really well towards the far corner, but the ball was turned around the post by a diving Bexon.
The game was effectively over when Whitstable scored their third in the 75th minute. Schafer threw the ball in, the impressive Day headed it on at the near post and Sithole stroked it into the net. Grant then fed Day whose attempt looped straight to Bexon and Lordswood substitute Callum Peck cut in from the left to shoot, but Colmer saved at the near post. In the 80th minute, Day won the ball deep inside his own half and with nobody except the Lordswood goalkeeper in the other half, he ran straight through on goal, but Bexon managed to get a touch to deflect the ball wide. The resulting corner came out to Fin Cotton who shot over. Late substitutions included a return to action for Reece Gillies after a long injury lay off. The game ended quietly with Whitstable collecting three points for the second time in three days, but Lordswood's relegation was confirmed.
Whitstable next face two games against fellow play-off hopefuls Rusthall and Fisher during the Easter weekend.
