RUSTHALL 2 WHITSTABLE TOWN 2
SCEFL Premier Division
Tuesday March 24 2026 19.45
A dramatic second half on a wet and windy night at Rusthall saw Whitstable earn the point they required to ensure they would finish as champions of the SCEFL Premier Division this season and gain promotion back to Step 4.
Whitstable shaded a relatively quiet first half that ended without a goal or any indication of the excitement that would follow. Jack Nelson fired Whitstable ahead soon after the restart, only for Jack Kirby to equalise for the play-off chasing hosts shortly afterwards. Nelson then collected two quick yellow cards to leave the Oystermen with ten men from the 57th minute onwards. Things got worse for the visitors when Dan Colmer failed to catch an inswinging corner in the gusty conditions leaving Thompson Adeyemi with a simple finish to give the Rustics the lead. Whitstable then showed why they have been unbeaten in the league since September 23rd and Will Thomas headed in a Bradley Schafer free kick to tie things up at 2-2. Home goalkeeper Serine Sanneh prevented Schafer from restoring Whitstable's advantage, but the rest of the game was mainly a determined defensive performance by the ten men to secure the point needed to spark the celebrations with the large contingent of Oyster supporters who had made the journey to see their team win their first league championship since 2007.
Whitstable travelled to Rusthall knowing that a win or draw would be enough to guarantee the league championship and a return to the Isthmian League after a four year absence. Only Fisher remained capable of matching their points total, if they won all of their games and Whitstable failed to gain any more points, and in that unlikely scenario the goal difference would also have been overturned. Whitstable had twice beaten Rusthall at home in February, in league and cup matches, 5-0 and 3-0, but this was always likely to be a less straightforward assignment on a different pitch, in wet and very windy conditions, against a team still chasing a play-off spot who had lost a home league game for the first time this season just three days earlier. Whitstable were missing a number of players, including Javaun Splatt, Ronald Sithole, Jake McIntyre, Jack Peters and Ricardo Thompson, so once again fielded a changed team, with Tyler Hatton, Lewis Chambers and Joe Healy returning to the starting eleven. The good midweek crowd of 235 included many that had made the trip to see if Whitstable could clinch the title ahead of their forthcoming eleven day break before their next game.
The game was played in pretty hostile conditions with rain falling throughout and a very strong, gusty wind. The opening exchanges brought no real chances for either team. Lewis Chambers delivered several long throws into the Rusthall box, but goalkeeper Serine Sanneh little to do. The referee tried to allow the play to flow, ignoring several fouls, but the Whitstable bench were not impressed in the 18th minute when Thompson Adeyemi was allowed to continue after pulling down Theo Osinfolarin whilst trying to keep the ball from going over the left touchline and eventually the ball was passed to Josh Reid some 30 yards from goal, but his shot sailed high over the bar. Reid sent a dangerous low cross into the box without anyone being able to get on the end of it. Whitstable might have scored from a Chambers long throw in the 23rd minute after the ball flicked off some players at the near post and Will Thomas arrived in the middle to help it towards goal, but Sanneh made a great one handed save down to his right before Bradley Schafer fired the loose ball over the bar from an acute angle.
Schafer made a run towards the box before trying to find the corner of the net with a low shot that was well saved at the expense of a corner kick. Following another Healy corner, the ball went across to the left and Jack Nelson bent a shot just wide of the far post. Rahman Kareem earned the evening's first yellow card for a poor challenge on Jayden Boulton who needed some treatment before being able to continue. Not for the last time, Sanneh rushed out to clear and Osinfolarin tried to find the unguarded goal with a shot from distance, but the goalkeeper got back to make an easy save. Whitstable conceded a corner on the 30 minute mark, but quickly played the ball forward to Nelson who twisted and turned past his marker before dragging a shot wide from 20 yards. Rusthall were forced into an early change and reshuffle when an injured Daniel Blunn was replaced by Charlie Clover in the 34th minute. A Schafer cross was headed back across goal and wide by Nelson, then Clover sliced a shot wide after a few quick passes got the home team to the edge of the Whitstable penalty area and Healy's free kick rebounded off the Rusthall wall after Osinfolarin had been brought down. Half time arrived with neither team able to make the breakthrough, although Whitstable had looked the more likely with the wind at their backs.
The second half provided much more entertainment for the spectators and Schafer soon won a corner that was poked wide of the near post by Nelson. Another Whitstable corner was swung over by Schafer from the left, Thomas rose with a couple of defenders at the back post and when the ball dropped, Nelson reacted the quickest to fire the ball into the roof of the net for his ninth Whitstable goal.; he has scored another 21 while playing for Rochester United and VCD Athletic. The celebrations were short lived however as Jesse Hammond skipped past Finn O'Mara on the left to find Reid and although his shot was blocked by Chambers, the ball rolled into the path of Jack Kirby who steered it past Dan Colmer to make it 1-1.
There was then a mystifying moment when Schafer's shot found the corner of the net, but referee Byron Beard brought play back to award Whitstable a free kick 30 yards from goal. O'Mara broke into the box and Sanneh got down to save his low shot across goal, but a scramble in the goalmouth then led to a booking for Nelson for his reaction after he had been pulled down. Colmer then got across well to turn away a shot from the dangerous Reid who had cut in from the left. Whitstable broke quickly from the resulting corner, but Nelson collided with Sanneh on the edge of the area and was shown a second yellow to leave Whitstable one short for the remaining 33 minutes. O'Mara was booked for a foul on Reid just outside the box, but Frankie Griffin's low free kick was hit straight at Colmer. The game was moving quickly from end to end and a Rusthall corner was swung under the crossbar by Louie Clarke, Colmer failed to gather in the tricky conditions and the ball fell kindly for Adeyemi who couldn't miss and Rusthall had got themselves a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.
Whitstable immediately brought on Dean Grant to play a lone role up front. A free kick was awarded to Whitstable on the left for foul on Schafer, whose delivery was met by Thomas who powered a header past Sanneh to level it up at 2-2 in the 70th minute. Clover then saw yellow for a foul on the determined Schafer as both teams gave everything. In the 76th minute, Jayden Boulton sent Schafer away down the left and he went past two defenders in the area, but Sanneh managed to push his shot away by the near post to prevent Whitstable retaking the lead. A left wing cross was headed over by Clover, then Sanneh came a long way out of his goal to try dispossessing Grant as play became ever more frantic. The ten Oystermen showed the spirit that has kept them unbeaten for so long in the league and although Rusthall had plenty of the ball and several late corners, Colmer wasn't really troubled again as Whitstable held on for the point that they needed to wrap up the league title a month before the season ends. The players and management team went over to celebrate with the supporters in the rain, although the trophy will be presented at a later date.
The result did bring an end to the incredible run of 13 consecutive away wins in league matches, although the overall unbeaten run in the league now stands at 23 games. Whitstable have five league games remaining to see how high they can push their points total and also start to plan for both the Kent Senior Trophy final and next season at Step 4. The team are back in action with two home games over the Easter weekend, against Fisher and Hythe Town.
