Late Nelson Goal Settles Aerial Battle

Not pretty, but a thirteenth successive away win brings title closer

PUNJAB UNITED 0 WHITSTABLE TOWN 1
SCEFL Premier Division
Wednesday March 18 2026 19.45

This season's FA Vase semi-finalists hosted the current holders as Whitstable Town travelled to Gravesend to play Punjab United. The Oystermen were looking to increase their commanding lead at the top of the league, while the home team were still in the mix to secure a play-off spot. It was no great surprise to see a physical, and largely aerial, battle, with chances very limited throughout the game. When a goalless draw was looking inevitable, it was the much changed Whitstable team that once again found a late winner with a rare moment of quality when Bradley Schafer's pass spilt the home defence for Jack Nelson to confidently shoot past Owen Bushell and bring the league championship three points closer.

These two Kent clubs that have enjoyed plenty of memorable FA Vase moments recently were focussed on the collection of league points from this game that was brought forward due to Punjab United's forthcoming semi-final first leg against Cockfosters when they will be attempting to reach Wembley and match Whitstable's success last May. The previous meeting between them was the season opener back in July when Whitstable won a tight game 2-1. Now needing just seven more points to secure the title and promotion back to the Isthmian League, but with a number of players carrying injuries and an eye on the games ahead, Whitstable made a number of team changes for this game. Top scorers Javaun Splatt and Bradley Schafer were named as substitutes together with Jack Nelson, Fin Cotton and Theo Osinfolarin on a strong looking bench. The two scoring substitutes from the previous game, Dean Grant and Joe Healy, were given starts, and there was a debut in defence for Tyler Hatton, recently signed on dual registration from Sheppey United. Play-off chasing Punjab were without the suspended Jack Hopkins and also made a late change in goal with Owen Bushell replacing the injured Lewis Briggs. The Whitstable away support helped to swell the crowd to 252, the largest league attendance of the season at the Steve Cook Stadium.

This game was always likely to be an aerial battle between two strong teams on a difficult playing surface and so it proved, with very few chances created. Whitstable did have an early opportunity when Isaac Currie's cross from the right found Dean Grant in some rare space in the box, but his header went wide of the near post. On 10 minutes, a deep cross by Punjab left back Ryan Gill was headed down by Roman Campbell for Will Johnson-Cole, but Will Thomas did well to get in the way of his shot and the ball was safely cleared. Grant was in the action again when put through by Healy's header and he tried to lift the ball over Owen Bushell, but didn't get it high enough and the goalkeeper saved, although it wouldn't have counted anyway because of a late and questionable offside flag. Zak Bryon then poked a bouncing ball over the bar following a long throw into the Whitstable box. When Owen Bushell raced out to head clear, Connor Wilkins tried an ambitious shot from the halfway line, but it skewed well wide.

Whitstable almost found a way through in the 34th minute when Grant headed on a Lewis Chambers clearance for Healy who managed to make himself enough space to try a 20 yard shot that curled just past the far post. Bryon was booked for halting a promising Wilkins run about 28 yards out, but Wilkins drilled the resulting free kick wide. Punjab then won the only two corners of the half, which were safely dealt with by the Whitstable defence. In the 42nd minute there was a brief scare when Dan Colmer tried a clearance from the right corner, but hit the ball straight to Bryon just inside the Whitstable half and he took aim at the open goal, but Colmer got back across to catch a ball that was probably drifting just wide. Punjab had a chance just before half time when a long throw was flicked on and Roman Campbell rose to head wide from eight yards. Neither goalkeeper had really had a save to make in a very uninspiring, but hard-fought, first half.

Whitstable made a change when the players returned, with Schafer replacing Jack Peters who had picked up an injury before the break. Chances in the second half were again few and far between with the first threat from the home team coming when Lee Bird swung a high ball into the box that eventually dropped to Johnson-Cole, but a couple of Whitstable defenders were soon on the scene to block his attempted shot. On 55 minutes, Healy hooked the ball on for Grant who got between two defenders and was about to go around the goalkeeper, only for Wayne Bushell to get back and tidy up. Harry Ottaway dragged a long shot well wide, as the goalkeepers still remained largely untroubled. Whitstable introduced Splatt for Grant and then, ten minutes later, Nelson for Healy, as the ball continued to be launched backwards and forwards with little end product.

A goal seemed unlikely as the teams were effectively stopping each other from playing until the decisive moment of the night in the 86th minute. A Punjab throw in the attacking third was unusually thrown short and Schafer nipped in, won possession and carried the ball down the left touchline before making a great pass across to Nelson who had made a run through the middle and shot past Owen Bushell from 18 yards. Punjab tried to respond and Thomas was quick to block a shot by Ottaway after a ball into the box had been partially cleared by Hatton who had performed well in a tough first game for the club. There was one last opportunity for an equaliser in the 90th minute, just after three Punjab substitutions. George Monger sent over a deep free kick that was headed back into the middle by Roman Campbell and Ottaway found himself unmarked about eight yards out, but headed well wide. Whitstable had again taken the points with a late winner, which was actually the only effort on target by either team in a close, battling encounter. The teams will meet again next month, on a very different surface, in the Kent Senior Trophy final at Maidstone.

The result extended Whitstable's long unbeaten run and was their 13th successive away win, and they now find themselves 21 points clear at the top, requiring four more from their last seven games to achieve their primary objective of this campaign. Next up for the Oystermen is a home game against Chislehurst Glebe on Saturday.
