A record breaking crowd watched the new Whitstable team entertain the previous version, or at least the majority of it. Unfortunately, for most of those in attendance, the game was effectively over in the first few minutes, as the home team failed to read the script and Margate took full advantage as they raced into a 2-0 lead, with Ronald Sithole and Connor Wilkins on target. Whitstable did eventually become more competitive, but even with no more first half goals, not too many in the ground would have been optimistic that they would get anything from the game. Javaun Splatt added a third with a trademark finish early in the second half and later hit the post. Whitstable did get themselves into a few promising positions, but were unable to find the net.

This first league meeting between the two north Kent coast teams for many years was always likely to attract a lot of interest following the abrupt summer departures of Jamie Coyle, his management team and most of the players, who opted to join league rivals Margate after two successful seasons at Whitstable. The Bank Holiday crowd of 1,873 was a league record at the ground, although well behind the 2,905 that watched the FA Vase semi-final in 2025. The Margate squad of 16 contained 10 former Oystermen. Whitstable were still hampered by injuries to key players, with Tom Hanfrey being the latest to join the growing list of absentees. There was however a return to action for Kweku Lucan and Kenny Aileru had recovered sufficiently for a place on the bench. Both teams had played FA Trophy games away to Isthmian South Central teams on Friday evening, Whitstable winning at AFC Portchester while Margate lost at Ascot United.

The game could hardly have started better for Margate when a heavy touch in midfield by Harrison Pont was pounced upon by Ronald Sithole who ran past Nathan Green to find Javaun Splatt and he returned the ball to Sithole to go around Dan Colmer to score with just over two minutes on the clock. Things soon got worse for the home team when Margate scored again in the 5th minute. Whilst a few disruptive visiting fans who had let off a blue flare were being escorted from the ground, Whitstable failed to deal with a ball into the box and, after a Finn O'Mara shot was blocked, Connor Wilkins hit a low shot through the crowded box to make it 2-0. Jack Nelson got his head to a left wing cross, but the ball looped up towards goal and Harry Seaden was able to collect safely under the bar.

There was some promise for Whitstable when Ryan Bernal broke quickly with Lucan who shot over from the edge of the box. Bradley Schafer collected a loose ball and got himself into the box, but his low shot was an easy save for Colmer. Whitstable went close to pulling a goal back on 31 minutes when Alex Wall chested a high ball down for Perri Iandolo who returned it to him and his shot was partially saved by Seaden, but O'Mara was on hand to clear as the ball rolled towards goal. In the 36th minute, a Pont cross was headed in by Wall, but the effort was disallowed for a foul. The last action of the half saw Iandolo strike a free kick over the bar after Henry Young had been fouled by Gibou Njie. The half had been relatively even after the disastrous opening spell for Whitstable who trailed by those two early goals at the interval.

Manager Lee Martin made two changes to the Whitstable team for the second half with Robbie Rees and Charlie Thomson replacing Jack Hanson and Jack Nelson. A Whitstable free kick was passed to Bernal on the right and his cross rolled right through the goalmouth with nobody able to get a decisive touch. O'Mara was cautioned for a foul on the left touchline as Whitstable started the half well, but the defence went missing when Splatt was left alone at the back post to volley in a deep O'Mara cross in the 55th minute. Iandolo spun past his marker with some neat footwork and when his initial shot was blocked, he recovered the ball and shot into the side netting, although it brought a cheer from the far side of the ground who thought it had hit the back of the net. In the 71st minute, Splatt ran on to a ball played through the Whitstable defence and shot past Colmer, but off the post.

O'Mara headed a corner wide before Alieru crossed for Derek Asamoah who found space to shoot, but Seaden saved. Whitstable were threatening, without being able to find a way through and Young's shot rebounded off a defender, then Aileru shot straight at Seaden. A Whitstable corner reached Thomson on the edge of the area, but his shot went over the bar. Lucan's header following a corner was straight into Seaden's hands on the line. In added time, Green shot just wide when set up by Young. Margate had done enough to collect the three points and continue their positive start to the league campaign, but Whitstable will know their slow start, not for the first time this season, proved decisive.

Whitstable's next three games are all cup ties, with an FA Cup test away to Step 3 club Hanworth Villa first up on Saturday, swiftly followed by a return to Margate in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday.
