Missed first half chances prove costly as Black header sends Whitstable out of FA Cup

Whitstable exited the FA Cup in the replay at Fetcham Grove with the only goal being a towering 24th minute header by Cameron Black. Whitstable themselves had several good opportunities in the first half, but were unable to beat Jacob Bennett in the home goal, whilst a trio of goal line clearances prevented Leatherhead adding to their score and kept the tie in the balance until the end. Whitstable saw plenty of the ball in the second half, but struggled to create many chances, so it will be Leatherhead who will entertain Corinthian-Casuals in the next round.

Leatherhead started with the same eleven that took the field at the Belmont and Whitstable made just one change with Tom Mills returning in place of Ben Harding. The home defence began somewhat tentatively and a couple of mistakes almost let Whitstable take an early lead as Ryan Flack found himself with the ball on the edge of the box, but he was unable to get a shot away as defenders got back, so passed to Tom Carlton whose shot was blocked. Leatherhead had their first attempt in the 5th minute when the impressive Alex Sami pulled the ball back for Andrew Briggs whose shot was deflected away from goal. A long clearance by Dan Eason was then missed by the home defence leaving Aaron Millbank in possession, but his shot was saved by Jacob Bennett. In the 14th minute, some good pressing by Whitstable resulted in Liam Gillies being able to set up Jake Mackenzie for a first time cross that picked out an unmarked Nico Cotton at the back post, but he seemed to see it late and volleyed over when he looked odds on to score. Leatherhead then had their best period of the game, winning three corners in succession, the last of which was headed over by Will Salmon. The only goal was scored in the 24th minute when a free kick was conceded on the left and Briggs curled in a dangerous cross that was headed past Eason by Black. A few minutes later, Whitstable somehow managed to avoid slipping further behind when a right wing cross reached Kwaku Frimpong whose shot rebounded off the left post and he tried again, only to find Mackenzie in the way, but the ball then came out to Crossley Lema and his curling shot was headed off the line by James Brown. In the 33rd minute, Briggs also had a shot cleared off the line.

Having survived a difficult period without conceding again, Whitstable had several more chances of their own before the break. From a corner, the ball came out to Gillies and after his effort was blocked, Flack sent in a left footed shot that Bennett did well to turn around the post. Flack slipped the ball through for Millbank whose shot was saved by the outstretched leg of Bennett, then Flack again created an opening for Carlton, but Bennett made another great save low to his left. The final chance of the half also fell to Carlton, who collected a pass from Millbank, but his shot from a tight angle came back off the post into the safe hands of Bennett.

There was much less goalmouth action in the second half, although the ever dangerous Sami drew a good save from Eason who got down well in the 53rd minute to push the ball out and Briggs put the rebound wide. After a double Whitstable substitution, Sami cut in from the left and curled a shot past the far post. Korrey Henry turned and shot wide, then Lema tried a shot that Eason pushed behind. Whitstable passed the ball around neatly at times and George McIlroy showed some promising touches, but there was little threat to the home goal. Leatherhead were happy to hang on to their lead and collected a couple of late bookings for time wasting, but they had done enough to secure their place in the next round.

Whitstable competed well over their two games against their Premier Division opponents, but it is now 11 years since they last got beyond this round, and now return to league action on Saturday with the long trip to Lancing, with both teams looking to pick up their first points of the season.
