Reserves get their first win of the season

WHITSTABLE TOWN RESERVES 4 TENTERDEN TOWN 1
Andreas Carter Kent County League Division 2 C&E
Saturday September 21 2019 14.45

A fantastic performance from the reserves gave them their first win of the season, beating Tenterden Town first team 4-1 at home. Tenterden came into this fixture having won all three of their previous league games. Whitstable set the tempo from the first whistle, with Tenterden struggling to cope with the pace and movement of the town players whose fast, attacking football created lots of chances. The first goal scored by 18 year old Kieran Jones was well-worked and started from the back four, into midfield, with Kyle Wisker putting Jones through and he cut back past his player and calmly slotted the ball home to give Whitstable a well-deserved lead. The second goal soon followed with some good football down the left hand side, before Callum Mason pulled the ball back to Josh Algar, who opened up the defence to play in Owen Fitt, who had a simple finish from eight yards out. Jones and Fitt were causing real problems for the Tenterden full backs who were struggling to deal with their trickery and pace. There was little threat from the forwards of Tenterden, as the outstanding Teddy Nelson and Jack Sutton were leading by example.

Whitstable started the second half where they left off and got their third goal when a short corner fell to centre back Sutton, who hit a fierce shot into the top corner of the goal from 25 yards out. It was a great strike that left the goalkeeper no chance. Whitstable had been controlling the game, but Tenterden started to come back and got their reward after a good ten minute spell, when some poor defending allowed their striker to get in behind before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Ryan Birch. Gerald Kwaku, a 16 year old academy player, became a real threat on the left hand side for Whitstable and he soon got his reward with a goal. Harry Stannard picked up the ball on the edge of the box and did really well to beat two players, before cutting back the ball back to the edge of the box for Kwaku, who hit a splendid shot into the roof of the net to put Whitstable 4-1 up.

It was an excellent performance from this young, exciting team, who look to be getting stronger each week. The reserves team provides a clear pathway for our academy players to prove their worth in men’s football.
