Whitstable fight back from a goal down in the Les Leckie Cup

WHITSTABLE TOWN RESERVES 2 DEAL TOWN RANGERS 1
Eastern Section Les Leckie Cup Second Round
Saturday October 19 2019 14.15

The reserves got back to winning ways after a disappointing 3-2 league loss last week to Rochester City Reserves.

Both sides cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw in September at Deal so this was going to be a tight game.

Whitstable fielded a strong starting eleven and started on the front foot, with some good football being played in the early stages. Muhammed Cham and Ifeanyi David both made some good runs on the left and right, without finding the net despite getting themselves into some good positions. Left back Callum Mason and Cham were working together nicely down the left hand side and a good ball through from Mason fed Cham who beat his man as he cut in, but he put the ball just wide of the post. The midfield trio of Josh Algar, Kyle Wisker and Mason set the tempo, with some neat and fast football to get the team playing. Deal however managed to go 1-0 up against the run of play when a clearance from their captain caused a mix up at the back. The Whitstable keeper, Ryan Birch, rushed out to the ball, which held up in the wind, allowing the Deal striker, Jake Hibbert, to simply take it around him and place the ball into the empty net. This boosted Deal’s confidence and they soon started to create more chances through their lively winger Sam Carpenter on the left hand side. Town though were level just before half time, when right back Callum Tydeman made a good run and cut the ball back from the right wing to Algar in the box and he found the net with the keeper failing to deal with his shot.

Whitstable started the second half quickly and were soon ahead within a couple of minutes, as a dangerous corner fell to Izaak Sargeant who glanced a good header onto the bar and the ball rebounded to Ifeanyi David who volleyed the ball into the corner of the goal. Sargeant was causing real problems throughout the game for the Deal back four by holding the ball up and running in behind. Whitstable made several substitutions that kept Deal on the back foot. Owen Fitt started to cause further problems down the right hand side, although the end product was lacking and Whitstable were unable to put the game to bed. The pairing at the back of Caleb Afoke and Luke Barrass looked very assured and untested at times, but credit to Deal who kept pressing and trying to find chances to get back into the game. The game ended 2-1 and it had been a very good game between the sides.

The reserves were the deserved winners of this game and advance to the next round of another cup competition, this time the Les Leckie Cup.

They get back to league action next week with an away fixture against Larkfield and Hythe Wanderers.
