On what’s becoming common now the boys started a little slowly, with a few silly mistakes early on. However the boys grew into the game quickly and were rewarded when Jacob Luton sliced the defence apart with a lovely through ball for Mehmet Rencber who went on to produce a fine finish one on one with the keeper for our first goal.
The boys spent the next 10-15 minutes playing some nice passing moves in midfield, with Mac Shahata in particular causing the opposition problems on the right hand side, but we we unable to capitalise and get the second goal.
Herne Bay came back into the game as the first half went on and scored 2 quick goals, which from our perspective where very preventable. The first from a free kick, then the second from a corner and with less than 10 minutes until half time the whistle couldn’t come soon enough.
The boys had other ideas though... from a free kick just inside the opposition half Ben Harvey played a perfectly weighted ball to the back post where Tom Bishop finished on the half volley. 2-2. Now the opposition want half time to come. But before that, Mehmet takes advantage of a bit of confusion at the back, blocks a clearance with his face, that he runs on to and rolls the ball over the line. 3-2 half time. Breathe!
It was always going to be hard for the second half to match the first, but the boys started well and kept it tight. Mac finally got the goal his performance deserved, with a bit of quick thinking, he robbed the ball from the goal keeper on the edge of his area and ran it over the line. 4-2.
With a 2 goal cushion we were comfortable. For the last 10mins Herne Bay threw the kitchen sink at us, but the boys were solid in defence and kept chances to a minimum.
Overall we were pleased with the boys on a great team performance. It was another week where we struggled to pick out the man of the match, all the boys put into practise the things we worked on in training and as long as they keep listening and performing as they are, we should have a fun and successful season.
Special thanks again to Morgan Harris for filling in in goal. The entire team, players and managers appreciate him doing it.
