The Whites were brought crashing back to earth on Saturday as Sittingbourne Green punished a passive start to run out comfortable 6–0 winners.

After a bright opening to the season, this was a morning when the Whites simply didn't turn up with enough intensity.

Sittingbourne finished third in Division 1 last season and had several players playing up a year, so there was plenty of reason to expect a physical contest.

In fact, we thought we might have the advantage.

We were wrong. ?

From the first whistle, Sittingbourne were quicker, sharper and far more competitive.

Benji started in goal, with Ellis, Jack B and Will Shooter across the back. Joel and Joshua formed the midfield, Jack U and George operated wide and Gabe led the line.

With Will Stevens unavailable through illness and Louie away, Jude, Jack W and Jack H provided the options from the bench.

The opening 15 minutes were painful viewing.

The Whites struggled to string passes together and, worse, were second to almost everything.

Sittingbourne took full advantage.

The opener came when Jack B was caught in a 1v1, allowing the Sittingbourne attacker to skip past him and finish.

1–0.

Two minutes later, it was 2–0.

Another 1v1 was defended far too passively, with a dangling foot replacing a proper challenge.

And before the Whites had time to recover, it was 3–0.

A free kick from just inside Sittingbourne's half sailed over Benji and into the net.

Three goals in four minutes.

It was probably the most disappointing opening 15 minutes we've produced.

The Whites weren't competing, weren't tackling with enough conviction and were making simple mistakes on a good playing surface.

Something had to change.

On came Jack W, Jack H and Jude.

And finally, the Whites started to show some fight.

Jack H competed well in the air, while Jack W and Jude added some much-needed bite. Jack U was working hard on the right and George and Gabe were beginning to compete for every ball.

A Jack U free kick picked out Ellis, whose header drifted just wide.

At the other end, Benji produced a good save from a 1v1 and began to look increasingly comfortable coming off his line.

There was one heart-in-mouth moment when he scuffed a goal kick and then played it again, giving Sittingbourne an indirect free kick.

Thankfully, they couldn't take advantage.

George took a knock but was able to return.

Then came another sucker punch.

Right on half time, Benji punched away a corner, only for the ball to fall perfectly to an unmarked Sittingbourne player on the edge of the box.

4–0.

Game over?

Perhaps.

But half time brought a simple challenge.

Show some fight.

Get into tackles.

Stop giving them time and space.

Compete for the ball.

Compete for each other.

The Whites emerged with a back three of Jude, Jack W and Jack B, with Jack H and Joel in midfield, Jack U and George wide and Gabe up front.

Unfortunately, the second half began much like the first.

Sittingbourne attacked down the left and, after some more poor defending, found an unmarked player inside the box.

5–0.

Minutes later came 6–0 as the Whites were again opened up far too easily.

To their credit, the players didn't completely fold.

Jack and George continued to work hard out wide, while George in particular was determined to chase and press whenever possible.

Gabe eventually had to come off with sore heels after battling away on the hard surface.

Will Shooter came on and was initially pushed up front, with George also joining the attack as we looked for a way back into the game.

There were glimpses.

A 1v1 opportunity came and went as the ball got caught underneath the attacker's feet.

Jack U was played through but was forced wide.

George continued to chase.

Joshua replaced Joel in midfield.

And later Gabe returned, this time at centre back, where his aggression helped stem some of the Sittingbourne pressure.

But the deficit was simply too large.

The final stages passed without further scoring and Sittingbourne comfortably saw out the game.

There is no point dressing this one up.

We were second best.

The biggest disappointment wasn't losing to a good Sittingbourne side.

It was the manner of the start.

At this level, the basics matter.

Get into space.

Give your teammate an option.

Lose the ball? React.

Tackle properly.

Don't dangle a foot.

Don't let the ball bounce.

And, above all, compete.

Because when we do those things, we know we can score goals and pick up points in this division.

Today, we didn't do them consistently enough.

⭐ PLAYER OF THE MATCH — GEORGE

After a disappointing opening, George turned his performance around and became the Whites' biggest competitor.

He chased.

He pressed.

He battled.

He refused to give Sittingbourne an easy afternoon.

And that's exactly the attitude we needed from the start.

Today was passive. Lacklustre. Not good enough.

But it's one game.

We know we're better than that.

Next week, the Whites return home to face Herne Bay Harriers, who have three points from their opening two matches.

Another test. Another chance to put it right.
