After last week's disappointing defeat at Sittingbourne, the Whites were back in action at Radfall on Saturday, looking to show a response against Herne Bay Harriers.
And while the result didn't go our way, the performance was a huge improvement.
Last week we had been too passive.
This week, we had energy, aggression and fight.
With Benji on goalkeeping rotation, it was Joel's turn between the sticks, while Louie was away at motocross.
There were also late withdrawals, with Gabe unwell and Jack W unavailable due to birthday plans. With a few players having been affected by illness recently, we called Zach up late on Friday night.
Training during the week had focused heavily on being more energetic and aggressive defensively — getting into tackles, competing for the ball and making life difficult for the opposition.
And from the first whistle, there was a noticeable difference.
Harriers started brightly and forced a couple of early corners, but Joel looked assured in goal and the defence stood firm.
At the other end, Jack U had an early opportunity but couldn't quite get the ball out of his feet.
Then, after five minutes, Harriers created a huge chance.
A cross from the right found their striker in front of an open goal, but a fortunate bobble sent the ball over the bar.
A let-off.
Three minutes later, though, the visitors took the lead.
The Whites were attacking and had a chance to go in front, but Harriers won the ball and broke quickly. Their striker did brilliantly to beat Jude and get a shot away.
Joel produced an excellent save, but the rebound fell kindly to Harriers and was tucked away.
0–1.
It was a frustrating goal, particularly as the game had been fairly even.
But the Whites didn't let their heads drop.
Four minutes later, we were level.
Jack U picked up the ball on the right and threaded a superb through ball into the path of Will Stevens.
Will made no mistake.
1–1.
Game on.
Jude was having an excellent game at centre back and was actually due to come off, but Joshua was feeling the heat, so we changed the plan.
Zach came into midfield and Jack B replaced Ellis at right back.
The Whites then enjoyed a really good spell.
George had a great opportunity to put us ahead but couldn't find the finish.
A minute later, Will Stevens had another chance, but again we couldn't quite get the ball over the line.
The chances were coming.
Unfortunately, so was the punishment for not taking them.
After 22 minutes, Harriers broke into a 2v1 situation and took advantage of some poor defending to restore their lead.
1–2.
Half time arrived with the Whites still very much in the contest.
The second half brought another reshuffle.
Joel continued in goal, with Ellis moving to left back and Jack B switching to the right. Joshua dropped into centre back, with Zach and Jack H in midfield.
Jack U and George remained out wide, with Will Stevens continuing up front.
The game remained finely balanced.
Both teams were creating chances and both looked capable of scoring.
Then, with around 15 minutes of the half played, Harriers extended their advantage.
A shot from the edge of the area was spilled by Joel. He recovered and appeared to have gathered the ball, but the assistant referee judged that it had crossed the line.
1–3.
A frustrating one.
But there was no collapse.
The Whites kept going.
Chances continued to come at both ends, with the Whites creating opportunities to reduce the deficit.
Jude and Will Shooter returned, replacing Jack B and Jack H, with Joshua moving into midfield and Ellis switching across to right back.
The Whites were pressing.
Harriers were defending.
The game was becoming increasingly stretched.
Will Stevens then broke through on goal and was clearly pulled back.
He still managed to get a shot away, but the foul had allowed the defender enough time to recover, meaning Will couldn't take full advantage of the opportunity.
Still, the Whites refused to give up.
And eventually, the pressure paid off.
Zach picked out George with a lovely pass.
George finished well.
2–3.
Game on.
Suddenly, Harriers were under pressure and the Whites were pushing for an equaliser.
The match became end-to-end.
Harriers had chances.
Whitstable had chances.
Jude was inches outside the area when the ball struck his hand, with the Whites fortunate not to concede a penalty.
Joel produced another excellent piece of goalkeeping, racing off his line to sweep up a through ball.
And there was another important contribution from Zach, who not only worked hard but was constantly talking, encouraging his teammates and helping those around him stay switched on.
The Whites were still fighting.
Still running.
Still looking for that equaliser.
But with around a minute remaining, Harriers found the decisive moment.
They broke quickly, played the ball into their striker and he produced a good finish.
2–4.
There was barely time to restart before the final whistle.
Joel did still manage to add a little more drama, getting winded and having his thumb trodden on by the Harriers striker after doing well to win the ball.
And that was that.
FULL TIME: WHITSTABLE TOWN WHITES 2–4 HERNE BAY HARRIERS
The first three points of the season will have to wait.
But this was a performance we can take plenty from.
After last week's passive display, I asked for more fight, passion and aggression.
We got it.
We competed.
We tackled.
We pressed.
We created chances.
And for long periods, we went toe-to-toe with a good Herne Bay side.
The frustrating part is that we had enough opportunities to make this a very different result.
At 1–1, we had chances to take the lead.
At 1–2, we continued to create opportunities.
And even at 1–3, the lads refused to stop fighting.
George's goal made it 2–3, and suddenly we were right back in the game.
The fourth goal finally put the result beyond us, but the attitude never disappeared.
That's the biggest positive to take.
Last week we were passive. This week we were anything but.
Now we need to combine that fight with better decision-making and, crucially, take more of the chances we create.
Because if we keep playing with this level of commitment, the results will come.
⭐ PLAYER OF THE MATCH — JUDE
A superb display from Jude at the heart of the defence.
He was proactive, aggressive and consistently looking to defend on the front foot rather than waiting for danger to arrive.
Exactly the response we were looking for after last week's performance.
The result wasn't what we wanted.
The performance was much closer to what we expect.
The first three points are still waiting.
But if we keep fighting like this, they won't be waiting for long.
Heads up, boys.
We go again. ?⚽
